U.S. Navy - Repair Ships
Delta-Class Repair Ships
The Delta class were wartime-emergency repair ships converted from C3-class merchant hulls to meet the Navy's desperate need for forward repair capability. Displacing approximately 14,500 tons, these four ships carried extensive machine shops and repair facilities that allowed them to function as floating shipyards at advanced anchorages across the Pacific. While not as large or capable as the purpose-built Vulcan class, the Delta-class ships were essential to sustaining the tempo of offensive operations during the island-hopping campaigns of 1943-1945.

Lead ship of the Delta class, originally laid down as a C3-class cargo ship and converted to a repair vessel as the Navy rapidly expanded its fleet train. Delta served throughout the Pacific War, providing repair services at forward anchorages from New Caledonia to the Philippines. Her conversion from a merchant hull demonstrated the Navy's urgent need for repair capability as the war's scope exceeded all prewar planning.

Battle Star
Named for the star Alcor in Ursa Major, she was converted from a C3 merchant hull and commissioned in late 1941. Alcor supported fleet operations across the Pacific, operating at rear and intermediate bases where she repaired landing craft, escorts, and auxiliaries that sustained damage during amphibious operations. Her workshops ran continuously through the great campaigns of 1943-1945, keeping the fleet's smaller combatants in fighting condition.

Named for the brightest star in the constellation Orion, Rigel served as a repair ship in the South and Western Pacific throughout the war. Operated at key fleet anchorages repairing destroyers, destroyer escorts, and amphibious vessels. Her crew of skilled tradesmen - machinists, boilermakers, electricians, shipfitters - could fabricate replacement parts from raw stock when supply chains failed, a capability that proved invaluable in the remote Pacific.

Battle Star
Named for the hundred-armed giant of Greek mythology, Briareus was the last of the Delta-class repair ships. Converted from a C3 cargo hull, she joined the Pacific Fleet in 1943 and served at forward repair bases through the end of the war. Like her sisters, Briareus extended the fleet's reach by eliminating the need to send damaged ships thousands of miles to the rear for repairs that her crew could complete in the combat zone.
