George Washington-class
Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines
41 FOR FREEDOM — FIRST GENERATION
5 BOATS · SSBN-598 TO SSBN-602 · 1959–1961
The submarines that changed everything. Five boats built in a crash program that gave America an invulnerable sea-based nuclear deterrent. Converted from Skipjack attack boat hulls with a 130-foot missile section, each carrying 16 Polaris SLBMs. George Washington's first patrol in November 1960 established the leg of the nuclear triad that endures to this day.
