About the Museum
The National WWII Museum in New Orleans is the United States’ official museum dedicated to the American experience in World War II. Originally opened in 2000 as The National D-Day Museum, it was later designated by Congress as the nation’s official World War II museum in recognition of its mission to preserve and share the history, sacrifice, and legacy of the generation that fought the war.

Located on Andrew Higgins Drive in the city’s Warehouse District, the museum tells the story of the war not just through artifacts and displays, but through immersive, narrative-driven exhibits. These include fully restored aircraft, amphibious landing craft, personal letters, oral histories, and interactive environments that take visitors from the beaches of Normandy to the jungles of the Pacific.
The museum campus continues to expand and currently features multiple pavilions, including the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion, the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center, and the Campaigns of Courage Pavilion. Each one focuses on a different part of the global conflict, providing a comprehensive view of both the European and Pacific theaters, as well as the human cost and the enduring meaning of freedom.
