USS Tinosa (SSN-606) holds a distinguished place in American submarine history. The nuclear Tinosa carried a name earned in the Pacific war. Her WWII predecessor (SS-283) famously fired 15 torpedoes at the stationary tanker Tonan Maru No. 3, with only two detonating — providing definitive evidence of the Mark 14 torpedo's defective magnetic exploder.
