The largest and most capable heavy cruisers in U.S. history . 14 hulls completed, designed without treaty restrictions. Brought the 8-inch gun cruiser to its full potential. Several were later converted to guided missile platforms, bridging the gun and missile eras.

Named for HMAS Canberra, the Australian cruiser lost at Savo Island . the only U.S. warship named for a foreign capital. Torpedoed off Formosa in October 1944. Converted to guided missile cruiser CAG-2.
CA-71 USS Quincy

Carried President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference, February 1945. Shelled the Italian island of Elba and the Southern France coastline before transferring to the Pacific for the final push.
CA-72 USS Pittsburgh

Lost the first 104 feet of her bow in a typhoon in the Philippine Sea, June 1945. The bow section floated free and was recovered separately by another ship. Nicknamed 'Half a Ship.' Repaired and returned to service.

One of the last heavy cruisers to see combat . Korean War gunfire support and Vietnam War offshore bombardment. Decommissioned 1971 as the Navy closed out the gun cruiser era.

Commissioned just before war's end. Converted to guided missile cruiser CG-12 in 1959, bringing the Baltimore hull into the missile age. Cold War Atlantic operations.

Named for the light cruiser CL-50 Helena, lost at Kula Gulf in 1943. Late-war Pacific service. Korea-era operations before decommissioning.

Commissioned too late to see WWII combat. Part of the postwar reserve fleet through the Korean War period. Represents the massive industrial surge that built 14 Baltimore-class hulls in just four years.

Participated in Operation Crossroads, the 1946 atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Witnessed the first nuclear weapons ever detonated against a fleet. Placed in reserve shortly after.

Completed after V-J Day, never fired in anger. Reserve through the early Cold War. Represents the last wartime production run of American heavy cruisers.
