Seawolf-class
Nuclear Attack Submarines
Designed to be the ultimate underwater predator - faster, deeper-diving, quieter, and more heavily armed than any submarine before or since. Eight torpedo tubes, 50 weapons, high-strength steel hulls rated to 490 meters, and a pump-jet propulsor driving them past 35 knots.
The original plan called for 29 boats at $33.6 billion. The Cold War ended and Congress killed the program at three, each costing roughly $3 billion. The cancellation led directly to the smaller, cheaper Virginia class. But nothing in the water matches a Seawolf. Assigned to Submarine Development Squadron Five, all three operate from the Pacific Northwest.
