HSC-9は1952年6月18日、ノースカロライナ州エリザベスシティ海軍航空施設にて、ヘリコプター対潜水艦飛行隊3（HS-3）として設立されました。トライデントはピアセッキHUP-2Sレトリバーヘリコプターで運用を開始し、その後シコルスキーHO4SおよびシコルスキーHSS-1シーバットヘリコプターに移行しました。1959年にはシコルスキーHSS-1Nシーバットを受領し、夜間運用能力を獲得しました。HS-3は1961年にガスタービン動力のHSS-2シーキングを運用した最初の大西洋艦隊作戦飛行隊です。
