The most successful American submarine in history. Under CDR Richard O'Kane — former XO of Wahoo — Tang sank 33 ships for 116,454 tons in just five patrols. On her final patrol she sank 13 ships before her last torpedo made a circular run and struck her own stern. O'Kane received the Medal of Honor. Nine of 87 crew survived using Momsen lungs — the only successful escape from a sunken submarine in WWII.

Lost the same day as Tang. Depth charged by Japanese escorts while attacking a convoy in the Luzon Strait on October 24, 1944. One of the convoy's ships, the Arisan Maru, was carrying 1,781 American POWs — only 9 survived. Whether Shark's torpedoes struck the Arisan Maru remains debated. All 87 hands lost.

The last American submarine lost in World War II. Sunk by Japanese aircraft depth bombs in the Bali Sea on August 6, 1945 — the same day the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima. She was lost just nine days before Japan's surrender. All 84 hands lost.

Sank the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano on November 29, 1944 — at 59,000 tons, the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine. Shinano was the converted third Yamato-class hull and had been commissioned just 10 days earlier. CDR Joseph Enright's single attack remains the most consequential torpedo shot in history.
